Santiago de Compostela
Vézelay : via Lemovicensis
The route of Vézelay constitutes a route crossroads of pilgrims coming from the north and the east. The relics of Saint Mary Magdalene attracted many pilgrims in the middle of the eleventh century and made the town of Vézelay a path on the Via Lemovicensis.
Vézelay and the Basilica of Saint Mary Magdalean, as well as the Santiago's church of Asquins have been registered with UNESCO since 1998 on the roads to Santiago de Compostela in France.
A little history
Depending on his starting place, the pilgrim on the way to Saint Jacques de Compostela (Spain) had four roads and four assembly points he could choose from : Paris / Tours, Vézelay, Le Puy-en-Velay and Arles.
From Vézelay, two routes were open to pilgrims, one towards Bourges, via La Charité-sur-Loire, and one towards Nèvers. Both routes came together again in Gargilesse, just before arriving in the Creuse. Vézelay and the Abbey prospered considerably from the growth of the number of pilgrims at the beginning of the eleventh century, forcing the village to provide them with accommodation, in some cases even villagers’ cellars were converted.
At two kilometers from Vézelay, in Asquins, there is a reception point for pilgrims, especially on horseback. The monk Aimery Picaud would have resided there to write the first "Guide of the Pilgrim" (about 1135). The church of Asquins, dedicated to Saint-Jacques, retains a reliquary bust of the polychrome wooden saint (XVIth century) as well as a nineteenth-century stained-glass window depicting Saint-Jacques in pilgrim's dress.
To the east of Vézelay, the "Croix Montjoie" in stone, marks the place where the pilgrim discovered the basilica of the Madeleine.
