Fontenay-près-Vézelay

  • At 6 km from Vezelay

The village is well-known for the remains of a major metallurgical mining centre where  iron ore was excavated. Next to it there are  furnaces  and a small temple dedicated to Mercury.

Also an unusual church with a subterranean chapel under the choir can be found and sculptures with carved palm trees, referring to  the pilgrimage to St Jacques de Compostella.
